This is the first post of the mashups series: A mix between Lana Del Rey and Amy Whinehouse…
Lana Del Rey is a singer that I really like. Her voice is very interesting and smooth. Her texts are poetic. I could listen to her songs 24/7. Even Though we don’t have the same voice, I love to make covers of her songs. I have to sing a bit higher than her sometimes because we don’t have the same vocal capacity, but I think it creates something different which allows us to hear her words differently.
It took me a lot of time to decide which of Lana’s songs I wanted to mix together. I wanted a common theme between them so the lyrics would make sense: A lost Love or a toxic relationship. These are recurrent themes in Lana Del Rey’s songs
At first those were the songs I chose:
Video Games
Born to Die
Summertime Sadness
Because of a question of rhythm I had to replace Video Games with Blue Jeans. And because of a question of length I added two more Lana songs. Hope is a dangerous thing for a woman to have and Young and Beautiful.
I decided to sing these Lana songs over Back to Black by Amy Whinehouse because this particular song by Amy shares the common themes, I mentioned above. I hesitated for a long time on the karaoke version I wanted to use for this cover/mashup. I had two options, a slow version at the piano (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6q3q_lEoLt0) and the original version (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8q6VoF-qXZo). I ended up choosing the second option. The first one was interesting because it resembled Lana’s music much more. Unfortunately, it felt like the slow version was too far away from the original one and it didn’t suit me. Furthermore, the original version was faster which made the cover look more lively. It gave another teint to Lana Del Rey’s words.
I recorded the whole thing on Imovie and added a bit of rain in the background to suit the mood.
